Friends, nice to be between bloggers. Now let me put the reason why I have selected this topic.
Last two years we have witnessed a downturn and probably the recovery track also. In fact we are special who have witnessed such a great crisis and coming out of it also. Now without dragging much, in economic downturn, only those companies survive who are innovative and these companies come out stronger out of tough times and people say the best innovations are developed out of a crisis-driven need. Somehow I have got different line on this. Too much innovation drives Crisis.
Just to site few examples:
Too much innovation in financial instruments and Credit instruments leads us in financial trap and the whole world drowned in recession. Unlimited innovation could be really harmful.
Many people will think that innovation is the most important thing. But if you look at Steve Jobs who is the propagandist of continuous innovation but that usually did not lead his firms to high profits and market leadership. Consider electronics industry, which always confuses their customers. On the other side if you look at the healthcare industry, that no one knows who to believe.
Now imagine a Drug company has manufactured a great supplement which improves your health, now time to take out this information to the market is very high. Generally people are skeptical about healthcare innovations.
Just remember Dotcom burst in year 2000 which is primarily attributed to rapid innovation in the market place. The whole world was going gung ho about dotcoms and finally it got burst.
Now what’s next?
Going green is today’s buzz word. Everybody has caught this bandwagon and driving really high on it. We are talking about so many clean technologies and cleaner sources of energy. One of my friend said that he wanted to buy Instant electric water heater. I asked him “why” as you have already got solar water heater. He immediately said that’s why I wanted to have it. Solar water is not much of help in Bangalore.
Don’t take this the wrong way. I am a huge fan of innovation, but I think it has become such a focus that sometimes things are labeled ‘New and Innovated’ that really are neither.
Definitely innovation is a long process and takes a long time to catch-on. So I feel that innovation should be done in steps. Some innovation is done and then it has to be widely accepted and then it should be taken forward.Just to finish on a lighter note, Mr Y suggested that we will be having apparels which will talk to each other. If your heartbeat is very fast and abnormal then immediately your shirt/t-shirt will send messages to your doctor/ambulance. Now imagine Mr Y is watching sexy English movie late night and heartbeat goes up and Ambulance is right there in front of Mr Y’s place.
