TRPs of news channels had jumped up in last month. The reason was IPL commissioner Mr. Lalit Modi. In fact on the eve of IPL3's final match; I was jumping between the news channels to find out if some new masala is out. Amazingly i got that next day morning when Modi was suspended in stroke of mid night.
IPL is commercial product and how well Modi has used CRICKET to create that. In India if you don't talk cricket language, people will give blank stare. Cricket is a joining platform for all the religions and all age groups. Just to explain the equation in the title:
EQ--> stands for 'Ego Quotient'
EQ--> stands for 'Entertainment Quotient'
GQ--> stands for 'Glamour Quotient'
The whole foundation of IPL is based on satisfying the Ego of powerful people, whether its Dr. Mallya or its Ms. Preity Zinta. Modi captured this very well and obviously the value proposition was 'I own X franchise'. The concept was sold very well. On the game of Cricket, the layers of Entertainment and Glamour were spread beautifully. Who does not want to see Katrina or Deepika for whole 4 hours? Amazingly sold!!!
Most of the franchisees are somehow able to do break evens, of course with the blessings of BCCI but still its not clear why SAHARA and Rendezvous Sports have paid hefty amounts to get the new franchisees. Finance does not substantiate that. I think it’s the Ego and intangible/indirect benefits, which the companies/products of the franchisee owners might get.
After IPL3 off the field mess, lets see how Mr. Chirayu Amin flourishes IPL in 2011 and onwards. Quite challenging job for him. let’s hope Chirayu Amin keeps live Soul of IPL which is PURE Cricket.
Hats off to Modi for creating such a great product but we should never forget that things which are blown out of proportion come under scanner. Modi, a great business mind, but forgot to maintain the transparency and accountability much similar to what happened to Enron.
Comments are welcome!!
